re: #226 Hecuba’s daughter

The coal miners are not interested in exploring alternatives that may require book learning. They are especially not interested in hearing suggestions from a woman. They are only interested in preserving the old way of life and not confronting the frightening new world out there.

Of course, part of the problem, despite what Bret Stephens has to say (nytimes.com), it’s possible that thanks to modern technology, there won’t be well-paying jobs available for much of the population.

They want those old jobs because that’s all that the small burghs they hail from can support. The educational infrastructure for jobs that require more than a basic education just don’t exist and the cost of creating them would mean either relying upon federal funding or increasing local taxes. And since the first is treated as tantamount to socialism while the latter is viewed as the gateway drug to such, they choose to remain dirt poor and every bit as dumb because it worked for their families for generations.
