Does the NY state income tax form still essentially *start* from a number you bring over from your Federal 1040?

I seem to recall doing them myself in the early 1970s.* And that the initial gross income on the NY form was taken from your Federal 1040 gross income.

* - I was in my teens and my income was some bank deposit interest plus a bit of cash made from summer jobs. My father thought that doing my own tax forms, even for minimal amounts, would be good practice for when I was older and would have more complex returns. Also a good way to learn about the different bits of the tax forms (federal vs state), deductibles, etc. etc. In retrospect I consider it a good idea since I did my own taxes up until the 1990s when I started supervising one of my parents’ trusts and since an accountant was doing those taxes I figured he might as well do mine as well.
