Perhaps actually seeing your pay be diminished in front of you would drive home just how big a bite the tax was.

And of course, the alternative to seeing the deduction at the pay window would be:

To have you pay some coins every time you enter a street;
To have you pay some extra coins every time you buy gas for your car, to pay for the support of the whole fuel infrastructure and national support of those involved in getting you gasoline;
To have you pay some extra coins before you can unlock the door to your home, to pay for the services needed to keep that place safe, serviced, and marketable in the future;
And so on and so on….
