McCain’s first choice was joe Liebermann, but he was an Independent (ex Democrat) and Jewish, which would have totally alienated the extreme right/Christian fundamentalist wing of the party.

McCain was smart enough to know that Sarah was a bad choice, but she was foisted on him as his only choice if he wanted the slightest chance of winning.
