Yes! I’m trying to do a WWI read-a-thon and I want to incorporate contemporary material into it. I have Farewell to All That by Robert Graves on my list too. And of course Farewell to Arms and Remarque’s Three Comrades.

Ah. Then be sure to reread Wilfred Owens and Siegfried Sassoon in the light of the literature. And “Farewell” remains the only thing that must be read by him. The rest of his output is just the same story, with different names. But Farewell gave us this:

“If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”
