Rich and powerful are more capable of surviving prolonged instability. The richest and best positioned are able to capitalize on faltering businesses (takeover targets), expand their markets, and watch as rivals disappear.

Everyone else struggles to get by.

Of course, the richest folks think that they’ll get by, when they really have a house of cards.

That’s why Trump fixates specifically on interest rates. His entire house of cards is predicated on loans and carrying costs - higher rates means his businesses pay more in loans. Reduce the rates, and he’s saving money personally and directly.

It’s also why he doesn’t care how much people suffer from the trade war, although Ross admits that they’re holding off on next tranche of tariffs to avoid harm into the Christmas season (which explicitly shows that China isn’t paying the tariffs, but American consumers).
