True belief simply means following the teachings of Christ. Love your neighbor, follow the golden rule, don’t be an asshole. It doesn’t mean use scripture as a legal argument against gay marriage, abortion, or capital gains taxes.
I have only heard this one time, but it stuck for all these years. In high school theology, Father Handjob (if we only knew…heh) said the most important words of Jesus were the Beatitudes. They differentiate the New Testament from the Old. I don’t know anybody who knows all 8 of them, but everybody knows the point of them. “Don’t be an asshole” isn’t expressly a Beatitude, but it’s sort of covered in the penumbra of them.
