The Jefferson quotes are funny given Jefferson’s own hostility to popular democracy. Not a slam on Jefferson really but we ignore the founders’ elitism when it comes to things like popular suffrage and land ownership and of course racial equality. They were great men but flawed men and also men of their times. We can learn from both their successes and failures.

On the other hand, given that in Southern states like Virginia there were many illiterate people, we might grant Jefferson a point.
