A lot of it goes back to the wingnut creation myth of America as a nation of hard-working “independent” white men who built a country, fought for their independence, tamed the wilderness, and then built it into an international juggernaut without a bit of help from anybody. That any time the federal government tried to intrude on that “independence” has only led to ruin and hardship. And that the moment the nation began to fall apart was when people “started getting paid not to work.”

The conservative ideal is for people to work without being paid — you know, the good old days in the south, many intern jobs, or volunteers for various organizations.
