Trump was worried that a tanked economy would ruin his re-election. Tories were worried that between Covid and Brexit, the economy would enter a tailspin.

Hence the totally counter-productive reactions.

It really seems as if conservatives worldwide (but especially in the US) have completely gotten high on their own supply of bullshit and talking points. At least in the US, Republicans can’t even be trusted with basic government functions like disaster relief etc., apparently because disasters can’t be bribed and don’t respond to corruption.
