A Republican legislature that tried this could also be tarred, feathered, and hanged by the neck until dead. No politician who has just won reelection is going to argue that the election was invalid. They certainly aren’t going to risk it in a vain attempt to save a president that many of them privately loathe anyway.

There’s also the little prisoners’ dilemma problem too: if enough legislatures tried it, maybe they could succeed in engineering a blatant coup (but I doubt it). If not enough legislatures tried it, the ones that did have a bit of a problem on their hands.
