Dad just finished basic training and was headed to flight school when the war ended. He had several first cousins who served, but so far as I know there were no casualties—no one ever talked about the war.

My grandfather and his two brothers served, one in Europe, one in both, and my grandfather in the Pacific. They all returned. He became an alcoholic, and they found him dead in a creek when I was six months old.
