Recently heard from a college age person who said “communism failed because they put everyone on welfare and nobody would work anymore.” Never heard of gulags or shock workers I guess. I wonder now if this bit of mythology came from a similar home-school bullshit course.

In the Soviet Union it was illegal to be unemployed.

For that, everyone was guaranteed employment.

For that, they were paid in money that they could not spend. There was roughly three times as many Rubles in circulation than goods to buy with them.

The practical upswing is that everybody had a job but they worked about a third of the time, the rest was spent loafing or ducking out to stand in line at a store…
