Doesn’t a primary candidate have to request Secret Service protection? I think once someone is nominee it is automatic but a candidate can get it if he requests it.

Primary candidates can request it. Secret Service gets to decide whether they want to grant it.
Trump is whining because Obama got SS protection unusually early, so he should too because he’s so much more popular and drawing yooge crowds.
