This reminds me of last year, when the Arizona state legislature passed a birther bill, mandating that candidates for President of the United States had to submit proof of their birth, before they would be allowed on the ballot in Arizona. (The bill was ridiculous on its face; the federal Constitution already mandates that the President must be a natural-born US citizen.) Anyway, it was shameful that the Arizona state legislature actually passed the bill. But then Governor Jan Brewer vetoed it.

This was only a few months after Obama came to Arizona in the aftermath of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting. He gave a very moving speech at the University of Arizona; Governor Brewer was present. I sometimes wonder if she would have vetoed the birther bill, had she not personally met Obama a few months before, at a ceremony that promoted healing and reconciliation (and by far the worst of all, memorialized that poor 9-year-old girl who died). Signing the birther bill would have been a bridge too far for her, and I’m glad for that.

This is one indicator of the health of our system of government: the checks and balances. Today, the Governor of Virginia “checked and balanced” the Virginia State Legislature. Yes, there’s plenty of bad right-wing craziness in Virginia, but we’re all lucky that one Republican, the Governor, decided not to cross the line into the crazy side of the room.
