At the time, the GOP was sharply divided between pro-labor liberals like Nelson Rockefeller (though he wasn’t yet the leader) and the stridently anti-labor Taft faction (of Taft-Hartley fame). This division dated back a long way. In 1940, for example, the Taft Republicans were the backbone of the pro-Nazi isolationist movement, but the nomination was actually won by a visionary internationalist, Wendell Wilkie. The latter was probably to the left of FDR himself on many issues, particularly segregation and racial justice.

Willkie if he hadn’t died prematurely could have been a great leader for the GOP post WWII. Not presidential material but a fine man.
