I canāt really answer those questions, except that all the redwood circles Iāve seen seemed to be much larger than any tree trunk could be (like six- plus meters) ā but thereās very little old-growth forest around, and I havenāt seen much of it, so maybe they could get that large. As to sun and nutrients, the little ones can grow because the big one died and fell, leaving space in the canopy for sunlight and providing nutrients to the soil.
