Monticello is made of brick —Mt Vernon of wood —hewn and painted to look like stone, a much cheaper construction. Washington was too “cheap” to pay for brick or stone.

If you walk thru the two houses, you can see the differences in the building costs.

I’ve visited both several times…Washington did not build his house as I recall, he remodeled it..and further he was stilling rye in the end to make money
