Could be, but actually I did ask her about that, and she said that wasn’t it. She said something about the machines dispensing money to customers and that they’d just walk out with it. I’m not sure if customers figured out how to scam the system or not.

It was a Wal-Mart, of all places - so the problem must have been big because I would imagine that they are the masters at designing their processes to squeeze out as much labor cost as possible. In effect, the change meant that it took a lot longer to check out than the last time I was in that store (about 1.5 years ago) - something that I’m sure has a big impact on their bottom line. That negative impact plus the increased labor costs must have meant that there was some major problem.
