You also used to be able to get a job like that and afford a modest place to live and the basics to live on your own. I left high school and went to work at a Goodyear factory that made car and truck dashboards. At 19 I was able to afford a car,a little rental house and take care of myself. Until a “fire of unknown origin”burnt the place up and our jobs were shipped overseas. The place never reopened. That was the last really decent job I had where I could put in 40 hours a week and be ok. From there it was retail for the next 30 yrs. Had decent insurance,but the pay was a joke,40 hours became 36,benefits went away. Oh,and if you had any thoughts of paid vacation too bad for you. Kids leaving school now haven’t got a shot at a 40 hr week job with benefits and enough money to be independant,sometimes even with college degrees.
