Here’s another one they like to use but they like to say that the poor should just rely on charity rather than public aid. I’ve got nothing against donating to charities but wingnuts of course ignore the corruption that does exist within charities. Really, I think the modern liberal is someone who realizes like a responsible adult that sometimes are better off in the public sphere, somethings in the private, and some things in both. The modern conservative meanwhile thinks like a hardline Communist in that he thinks only one way works.

One of the biggest problems with charity is where the money goes.

Much of the ‘charity’ does nothing to help the poor on any level. A very large percentage of the money donated goes to operating costs and management salaries. Many charities have nothing to do with helping the poor in fact.

On top of that the poor and middle class donate more to charities than the wealthy and as the article points out the wealthy generally give ‘charity’ to things they can put their name on.

If charity met society’s needs properly the social safety net would never have been created, because there would be no need to create it.
