It doesn’t necessarily rise to the level of treason though. Treason is very narrowly defined to aiding or giving comfort to enemies.

Russia is a rival, but one would have to prove “colluding with an enemy” to prove treason. Electioneering violation is much easier to prove (and is also a felony).

Russia is an enemy. Colluding with them to help defeat the candidate they oppose would seem to be treasonous. Trump asked them in public to release Clinton’s emails.
