As early as 1980, an officer at Camp Casey could explain “We’re not here to protect South Korea, we’re here to keep the South from going north and starting WWIII.” I suspect a good bit of that thinking was current in the 7th Army in FRG as well.

Our deployments overseas are meant to be stabilizing - including making sure that our strategic allies/partners don’t do something rash like starting a war.

But Trump is trying to undo all of it because he thinks that this is a protection racket.

Putin is overjoyed at this turn of events.
