Thing is Reagan did two things. He showed these last guys the Southern Strategy could pay dividends nationally and guys like Tom did personally well for themselves under Ron.The Anti-Trump right doesn’t need to make Reagan into Trump but they do need to acknowledge that a lot of what Reagan did helped make somewhat like Trump palatable to the GOP base.

And that was the point of the book “It was all a lie” written by a never-Trumper, who acknowledged that everything that the GOP pretended it supported was never relevant; they just wanted power. And as much as he liked Reagan, he admitted that the racism was there.
