Anyhow it pays to invest in your citizenry. Look at the GI BIll in the 50’s. Furthermore there are plenty of smart kids who have a hard time affording college. That’s not right. The status quo obviously isn’t working and I appreciate Sanders at least trying to come up with a solution.

The GI Bill was one of the best investments Congress has ever made in the American people. It has paid itself back many times over, helped the rise of the middle class during the middle of the 20th century, and helped drive so many new ideas and technologies. That we now look at that investment, at the idea of providing free or severely reduced cost higher education to all and think “But what about those who are already saddled with backbreaking student loans?” is astoundingly ridiculous. The rest of the world is eating our lunch because we as a country stopped viewing higher education as an investment and started viewing it as threat to “Real America.”
