You should point out that Rockwell was doing magazine covers, and thus work to someone else’s spec. Indeed, a lot of his work was relevant to an article or story inside the magazine, not “depicting real life.” Rockwell actually quit the SEP because of its constraints on what he could depict.

He then went on to create The Problem We All Live With while at Look magazine, as well as well as Southern Justice, and News Kids on the Neighborhood…reflecting his personal interest in civil rights.

So the basis of the argument is…not a basis. It can only be maintained if one ignores what’s known about Norman Rockwell’s own thoughts about his times, the larger industry of commercial art that he was operating in, and how those two things meshed and didn’t mesh.
