Bernie in fact lost votes from last time. The dirty secret that his campaign won’t tell you is he benefited from the fact that a lot of right wing Democrats voted for him as a protest over HRC. It certainly is what helped him in West Virginia.

Bernie tends to do well in caucus, and in open primaries where ratfuckers can participate. In closed primaries where only party members can vote, not so much.
