Some pros rave about the Sony mirrorless cameras, but the high end ones cost a pretty penny.

Sony are still pushing the envelope in sensors which makes them a good buy if the shooter is doing interesting things technically (low-light, extreme exposures etc.) Then again an acquaintance of mine is doing exhibition-quality human portraiture using a 4x5 film camera and homebrew lens setups — I fabbed a lens mount for him a while back to take an ex-WWII Aero-Ektar photo-reconnaissance camera lens. Other folks have done the same thing with other film cameras.
