I have never seen the word without the “a”. Ever. “How do you plead?” (pleed) “So-and-so plead guilty” (pled). That’s the only way I’ve seen it written. And “pleaded” sounds really illiterate.
Let’s have the AP stylebook weigh in.
It’s plead, pleaded, pleading. AP style advises against using the colloquial past tense form, pled.
