So, I’m sure everyone saw that George Zimmerman got stopped by LEOs in Texas for speeding. They let him off with a warning.

Nice of them.

But that got me wondering if he was adhering to state and federal law when it came transiting those states with his firearm in the glove compartment (he had legal permit in FL).

Mississippi allows the permitted owner to carry the firearm anywhere in the vehicle, including the glove compartment. So too does Florida and Louisiana.

Texas doesn’t have a problem with his carrying of a firearm, but if he had been stopped in Alabama, it could have been a problem.

Alabama doesn’t allow the firearm to be stored in the glove compartment:

A person
may lawfully transport a firearm, including a handgun, from one state in which they are legal to possess to another
state without a permit as required under Alabama law, provided the following conditions are met:
 The firearm is unloaded.
 Neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from
the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle.
 In case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment, the firearm and
ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the glove box or console.

Makes for a difficult situation, and LEOs have a tough time as it is with any vehicle stop.
