hey HW…found my illegal immigrant Irish/Fenian great-grandfather listed in the 1940 US Census. I had no idea he was still alive then.
But the BIGGER surprise was that his place of birth was listed as “Irish Free State”, which was only in legal existence from 1922-1937 (and he was born in 1873). In all previous Census reports, his birthplace was listed as Ireland. For whatever reason, something got his Fenian back reared up for the 1940 Census.
