Rugged individualism: the right of an individual to negotiate one-on-one with a multi-billion-dollar international corporation for terms of employment, insurance coverage or financial services.

Said “negotiations” conducted between an employee and a supervisor/manager who are paid to sell the company line about how “hard work can get you far,” but then quietly admitting that most franchise locations run on the Klingon promotion principle: The only way you go up in rank is in the person above you quits, gets fired, or gets promoted because the guy above them quit/got fired/etc.
