re: #179 Kenneth

The Nazi propaganda was tailored to present the Nazis as modern, progressive & scientific. The anti-Jewish hatred was focused on race, not religion, and included many pseudo-scientific arguments about eugenics.

Not to mention their belief in mystical causes for nearly everything (from the Thule Society), their extremely weird version of cosmology (Hans Horbiger’s “eternal ice” theory), and their rejection of Christianity (which Hitler referred to as a “Jewish lie”) in favor of pre-Christian Odinism. (I know that gets argued about, but facts are facts- the SS especially were devout believers in the Nordic pantheon.)

They were about as “scientific” as most of the extremists on the right and left today. While Germany had a lot of extremely good engineers and scientists, the attitude of their leaders of that day toward anything like that was summed up by Hermann Goering. When someone was trying to explain a new radio navigation system (X-Gerat) to him, the commander of the Luftwaffe responded;

Navigation aids mean boxes with wires. I don’t like boxes with wires.

So much for their being so much smarter than us poor, dumb, decadent democratic types.

cheers
