So the US Women’s World Cup soccer team scored more goals in Tuesday’s match than the US Men’s World Cup soccer team scored in all their matches since 2006.

Remind me again why the women are paid 1/3 as much as the men?

The gulf between the US women’s team and most other national teams in the world is bigger than the gulf between the best men’s national teams and the average men’s national teams from around the world. So comparing goals scored isn’t the best metric.

As to why the USMNT is paid more than the USWNT, my guess is that the argument would be that there’s still more money in the men’s game than in the women’s game. Better TV deals, higher ticket prices, etc. which would mean more money to go around. I don’t know that that’s actually the case, but I suspect that’s the argument. The other answer is likely “latent/benign sexism within the system.”
