Much as I like the 1812 Overture, I always wonder how it got associated with the 4th of July. Is it just so we can launch fireworks during the cannonade…

It was written to commemorate Russia’s victory over Napolean during that period, not our own ‘war of 1812’ (when the White House was burned down…)

Well, it’s a glorious piece of music. Stirs the soul. The cannon shots make it a natural for the beginning of a fireworks show. And it was Emperor against Tsar, not like the Cold War.
