Black versus White pickup games on the playground that lead to black-white fights that people can get “pulled into”? Kids self-aware of that level of race-as-tribe? That doesn’t smell right to me combined with this narrative of “we’re were all okay together.”

Either the entire setup is a fiction, his “one of his best friends” is fictitious, or we’re being robbed of a lot of context about the racial politics in the description.
