Myself? I agree with Gwynne Dyer’s hypothesis in Future Tense. The invasion of Iraq was a message to the rest of the world. The message was, “We are in charge and this is what happens to people who get in our way. Do as you’re told or this will happen to you.”

It was meant to be the start of Pax Americana. The oil was a bonus but not the central reason.
