There’s an argument to be made (I would have to look at a lot of numbers) to suggest that the restrictionist immigration view is growing in the GOP because the GOP overall is shrinking. If 30 people support something out of 300, it’s 10%; if 30 out of 200 support it, it’s 15%. Have to figure out why the position is gathering strength.
It can be argued - indeed, I have argued it - that most of the things proposed by the Right are about maintaining white supremacy.

- Gerrrymandering
- Retaining the Electoral College
- Restricting immigration
- Repealing the 17th Amendment
- Constitutional Convention
All of these pretty much directly empower rural white voters over metro area voters, in an attempt to cement their political power against demographic inevitability. I HOPE Trump’s election was their last gasp, their Ardennes Counteroffensive.
So remember - when Trumpkins demand surrender, the historically correct response is “Nuts!”
