re: #167 electrotek

I’ve read that pork is pretty popular in Armenia—roast piglet is the traditional New Year dish—and my Armenian cookbook includes pork. Korovats (kebab) is traditionally pork, very similar to Georgian mtsvadi, which I had in Tblisi. I mean, while Armenia used to be an Ottoman holding, for a century it’s been Soviet and both law and supply have allowed for pork consumption…and they’re right next to Georgia, which has great pigs (and great everything agricultural)….

Armenian food definitely…converses…with (halal) Turkish food, and I would wonder if the Armenian diaspora through Ottoman holdings meant that there’s a split within the food culture, where Armenians living mostly among Muslims shift away from pork entirely, but people in Armenia proper still raised and ate pigs.

(I was just in Georgia and Turkey, so this subject is very present for me.)
