I read years ago that the original concept for 2012 was a parody of all disaster movies; and certain scenes seemed to fit right in with that concept. It was intended to be way over the top and it was. In any case, I don’t believe his ex was married to plastic surgeon, but that they were living together.

It definitely was. I think the director enjoyed the movies as a kid and wanted to do them with real budgets and CGI.

It, and Neil Stephenson’s book Seven Eves, were partially reactions to George R. R. Martin. Stephenson said the only way he could think to outdo Martin in the death department was to kill off nearly everyone.
