I tried self-checkers a few times. Every time required intervention by staff, to fix something that wouldn’t scan properly, something in the bagging area that the machine accused me of not scanning, the bill clipper jamming on cash, &c.

They are not worthwhile for even one item.

The local supermarket doesn’t use them. Those in Scottsbluff and Sidney generally stand unused when I am in the store (personal observation).

I use the self checkout all the time and have had very few problems. It is SO much faster than waiting for a cashier it isn’t even close, and in my neck of the woods in central MA they get pretty much constant use.

Edit: even better than the self checkout is the little mobile scanner you bring with you and just scan items as you put them in your cart so you don’t have to scan anything at the register. Technology can be your friend.
