Alternatively, we might take a look at exactly why it’s hard to make a living ranching (not that it ever was easy.) Large corporations have consolidated most of the feedlot and meat packing operations reducing the options for ranchers who now generally get to do the highest risk part of the supply chain (cow/calf, where you breed the cattle and raise the calves for a few months until they go off to the feedlot) while having few choices of where to sell their cattle.
Driving across Nevada you used to see steers being raised on grass. I haven’t seen that in a number of years. All cows and calves and a few bulls. Maybe the Hammonds need to get out of the business if they can’t compete, but I have some sympathy for them. Where do you go after 50 years of ranching?

After 50 years of any job, isn’t retirement supposed to be an option?
