I totally ignored ET when it came out because it was so over-hyped and tied in with all sorts of marketing deals. (I think they were overcompensating for their dismal failure at marketing Star Wars in time for Christmas).

Finally watched it with my kids a while back; again, not a bad film and entirely entertaining but massively over-praised and over-promoted.
