So if you listen to their words Skynard was saying that Watergate happened and it did not make everyone in the country a bad person because we elected him. Just like ALL Alabamans were not responsible for their racist governor.

Now we all did what we could do

Now Watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth

Basically, you can still love your country or state even if it elected a bad person. Also, that people in Alabama don’t like to be told what to do but there were still things about the state worth loving.

That’s how I see it anyway.

Fun fact: Birmingham was actually the least supportive part of the state for George Wallace. Which is why Interstate 65 went nearly to Birmingham, then resumed north of Birmingham.
