I mentioned yesterday The Constitution That Delicate Balance, Part 11, Immigration (1984)
a couple of quotes - not all related:
asylum seekers “have a right to a hearing once they are in the united states”
but they still are detained in “jails” while waiting - note this is not “punishment”
“what they are doing is cutting these people off so they cant even apply”
alan simpson - people of america do not understand the difference between an immigrant a refugee a permanent resident alien.
they make no distinction about those persons whatsoever and every one of those is a key distinction.
after mariel, because this was unaceptable the policy was “were going to stop them”. if we made our policy hard enough they would stop coming…
re hatians: it’s a political response to a problem. the hatians have become a symbol. they look different they speak a different language theyre a different color and theyre physically isolated. its easier to stop them as a group and show them up as an example of some kind of progress.
oh, and they discussed “a wall”
