I’m ashamed to admit this, but I was a freshman in high school when he was killed and I laughed at what happened to him. I was a virulent homophobe back then and I detested gay people and found them to be filthy and disgusting.

Looking back, I wish I could take that back in an instant if I could. I’m so deeply ashamed of it.

I didn’t laugh about it - but I confess, when I was younger, I had a certain disdain for the LGBTQ community.

What helped me overcome that was working with a fellow back when I lived in the US - and he was a good guy; one of the best. He’d give you the shirt off his back to help you and he had a wicked sense of humor. The other thing that helped was seeing the documentary film The Times of Harvey Milk; one of the finest biographical films I’ve ever seen in my life and genuinely moving.

Since then, I’ve been a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights and equality.
