IIRC when the Pledge was first proposed, there were some who said it smacked of totalitarianism to require school children to say it every day.

From Kindergarten to 12th grade, I just mouthed the words. Remember the Jehovah’s Witnesses who refused to stand because it violated their religion. Of course the teachers and kids picked on them for being “un-American”, forgetting about a certain Supreme Court decision.

Also remember the School Prayer decision Until 2nd grade we were required to pray the Lord’s Prayer. Big fight at the School Board about what version was recited. Several people lost their School Board seats because they voted to force all students to recite the Catholic version…
