There’s a lot of anger—some of it generated in bad faith by crisis promoters—about how DoJ isn’t doing anything. But in the weeks after 1/6 they had something like 200K tips and counting to sift through. Also, something I heard on Fresh Air last week, is that the loose-knit org. that’s called Sedition Hunters is actually more advanced in techniques in some ways than the FBI; so the FBI has repeatedly relied on the crowd-sourcing, facial-recognition tools of SH to corroborate and then arrest the now 700 or so who have been or are awaiting trials. It takes massive resources, so these kinds of tips are really useful. There are still hundreds remaining to be either ID’d or picked up.

Part of what sedition hunters has is their combined socials follower lists; a lot of the “facial recognition tools” at their disposal is people saying “hey look, that’s Lisa’s ex-boyfriend Mikey. He said he was on a fishing trip when he took those days off in January” and “isn’t that the sweatshirt Joe thought was so funny when he wore it to the company picnic?”

DOJ also has to hold off on charging people who the 1/6 committee is speaking to, or who other 1/6 witnesses may bring evidence against; everybody remembers how congressional investigations of Iran-Contra and DoJ investigations of same kept stepping on each other’s toes.
