Yes. One of the major innovations Napoleon introduced in his army in Egypt was to issue lighter cotton uniforms. Once issued, those saved his troops a great deal of hardship.

The Union during the Civil War mostly had to use wool, as cotton grew in the areas that had seceded. This caused great problems for the troops, who hard to march in hotter conditions than their Revolutionary War forebearers.

Exactly. You really didn’t see another significant advace in uniforms until the Second Boer War when the Brits started using Khaki uniforms that effectvely blended into the dry grass of the veldt.
