To me it’s mind-boggling that he’s pulling a stunt like this only eight days before local elections. This move does nothing but galvanize the opposition parties. Whether the opposition parties can translate that into votes against the AKP of course remains to be seen.

It might not matter unless some of them exceed the 10% of the vote threshold for seats in the Turkish Parliament. This is a far higher threshold than is used in countries like France or Germany and it normally ends up resulting in large numbers of votes essentially not counting.
